Call of Duty : World at War is a first person shooter game like all other Call of Duty games. The game released on 2008 which was developed by Treyarch and Published by Activision. This is the fifth installment (main) of the franchise.
The game is playable on all major gaming platforms such as Microsoft Windows, Playstation 3, Xbox 360 and Wii.
This game’s story doesn’t connect to the previous game of the franchise, Call of Duty 4 : Modern Warfare. But this game is directly connected to the next game of the series, Call of Duty : Black Ops as the game mainly focuses on the incidents happened in World War II.
Gameplay Mechanics of Call of Duty : World at War
As we mentioned earlier, the game is a first person shooter game. That means the game is first person perspective game. The player can’t see the complete body of the in game playable character.
Basic Gameplay
Like other games in the franchise, this game allows the player to fight alongside teammates (or comrades). This can be considered as an amazing experience which can be seen in most of military games.

Like said before, the game’s plot centers around the World War II. (Two war fronts, Pacific and European). This also introduces weapons and technical aspects of that era. It can be a real challenge to use them as those weapons can be real hard to use unlike modern weapons we can use in games.
Like previous games, the playable character can use one of three stances, stand, crouch or prone. These stances heavily affect player’s accuracy, movement speed and stealth.
As you can see from the above screenshot, there is no health bar available in this game (Like previous games). The HUD glows in red color when the player under attack from hostiles and eventually die if the player is unable to avoid further attacks.
Modes Available
The game also contains Multiplayer mode which is very much similar to it’s predecessor, Call of Duty 4 : Modern Warfare. ( Let’s talk about multiplayer modes from another article).
Nazi Zombies Mode
Call of Duty : World at War introduced the zombie mode which was a really successful one. It’s the first time the players experienced this mode in Call of Duty series. It can be played either offline or co-op mode.

Plot of Call of Duty : World at War
In this game’s single player campaign, player can control 3 characters. The first one is Private Miller of the US Marine Corps’ 1st Marine Division. He and the US marines fight against Japanese soldiers in Asia. And the Second character is Soviet Private Dimitri Petrenko who fights aginst the Nazi army. Third character is Petty Officer Locke, who can be controlled in a single mission named, “Black Cats“.
The game story shifts between two war fronts as the story continues. In first part of the game, it features the efforts of US Marine Corps to defeat Japanese Army. In the game player, (Pvt. Miller) fights alongside Corporal Roeback (leader of the squad), Sergeant Tom Sullivan and Private Polonsky.
In the European front, the playable character Private Dimitri Petrenko fights alongside his comrades in Soviet Army, Sergeant Viktor Reznov and Private Chernov. The campaign goes from Stalingrad to Berlin where the player has the chance to see the end of the War in Europe.
Conclusion
Basically Call of Duty : World at War is a game which allows you to witness the incidents in The World War II. It suggests how hard a soldier’s life can be in a battlefield. As a gamer it’s a game you should play if you haven’t played it yet.
