Character Customization is an interesting aspect that we can observe in many games. Specially in Open World Games and Role Playing game categories. So, from today’s article, we are going to talk about this.

What is Character Customization?

Basically, character customization is allowing the player to create their own and unique playable character. Player can decide the way they want their main playable character in the game. In most cases, the game allows the player to create their character at the beginning of the game. Some games even gives the chance to change the appearance of the playable character in middle of the story too.

Now, character customization can come in different ways. Most of the games will allow you to decide many factors such as name, gender, build, voice other than the appearance. Some do not allow such factors and may just allow to change some minor things such as the hair style and facial expressions. For an example, Witcher 3 : Wild Hunt will not allow the player to customize Geralt’s (Main character) build, voice or such things. The player only can change his appearance(equipment) and hairstyle.

Examples for Great Character Customization Games

Most of modern MMORPG (Massive Multiplayer Role Playing Games) have much more greater character customization options. However we do not talk about them in here as we are going to cover them in a different article.

Two of the most successful game franchises invented by Bethesda, ‘Fallout series‘ and ‘Elder Scrolls‘ series can give as the prime examples for character customization games. These games allow the player to create their own character with plenty of customization options available. Furthermore, both of these game series are considered as open world RPGs.

You can even create entirely different character for some money. Also Saints Row games allow the most hilarious character creation mechanisms in gaming.

We’ll give you a list of some games which has some great character customization options.

  • Elder Scrolls Series
  • Fallout Series
  • Dragon Age Series
  • Saints Row Series
  • Dark Souls Series
  • Dragon’s Dogma
  • Monster Hunter World
  • Jump Force
  • Mass Effect Series
  • The Sims franchise

Conclusion

Overall, character customization is a ‘nice to have’ feature in a game. But when it comes to RPG and open world games, it really matters. This aspect is really important when you have to play as a character more than 30 hours of gameplay. If the character has interesting creation, there is lesser probability that you’ll become bored. So this is a much more important feature we require in huge games which has massive amount of Gameplay.
