Importance of Strategy Games

Strategy Games are the games which test the tactical and planing skills of the player. So, unlike other game categories, these games involves more about those qualities. They offer various type of challenges to the player so the player need to focus on many departments at once. (Such as combat, explore and managing)

Mechanics in Strategy Games

Like other game genres, strategy games has it’s own game mechanics. This includes the perspective, unit control, resource management and exploration.

Perspectives

Many old strategy games, came with the top-down perspective (Just like the picture above). This ensures that the player can see the entire terrain available to play. Why the game developers used this mechanic? Well obviously, the player can perform various strategies easily from this way.

Unit Controlling

Basically, the player can control either a single unit or multiple units at once. Usually this can be performed by clicking the unit/s. Sometimes games allows use the shortcut keys too.

Resource Management

In many cases the player has to involve around the resources. Resources can be money, food, building materials and population. In most games you can find these resources from the specific units. Both obtaining and controlling the flow of resources is much required in this games.

Exploration

As we said earlier, the player cans see the terrain available from the top-down perspective. In most times, most of the map is not explored. The player need to explore this terrain to get the upper hand. So the exploration is much more important just like the factors we mentioned earlier.

Strategy Game Categories

There are two main sub-categories in the strategy games category.

  • Real Time Strategy – The Game allows the player to play until the end of the game. Normally this category doesn’t offer more tough challenges than the other. Player is heavily rely on actions that artificial intelligence.
  • Turn-Based -Turn based strategy games offers more advanced challenges than real time. They do not allow to play the game continuously, player has to wait until the other player completed his turn.

Conclusion

So if you feel like playing strategy games, you are supposed to understand the most of the game mechanics. Otherwise you are in trouble. Specially in multiplayer modes. So make sure to follow the game tutorials and understand the basics properly. After that you can go to more advanced things. In that way you can enjoy most of games.
